Permeable Reactive Barriers

Application Description

A permeable reactive barrier (PRB) is an in situ treatment zone for remediation of contaminated groundwater plumes. These vertical walls are designed to intercept the contaminant plume flow below ground. As groundwater flows through the PRB, contaminants are either degraded or retained in a concentrated form by the reactive material.

Contaminated groundwater from former manufacturing sites pose a threat to nearby water sources and wildlife. CETCO's Organoclay and Reactive Core Mat technologies can be utiized to prevent this type of pollution from spreading.

CETCO Provides

  • Organoclay® PM-199, offered in both bulk and defined mass per unit area, creates a permeable barrier for contaminated soil and solids in river and stream beds.
  • Organoclay® MRM, specially designed for mercury and arsenic removal, can be used in capping applications to provide a permeable barrier in situations where either of these two metals are present in the contaminants.
  • Reactive Core MatTM (RCM) is designed to provide a simple method to place active materials into subaqueous sediment caps. RCM allows for thin, stable layers of reactive media to be evenly placed in a very precise manner.

Benefits of Utilizing CETCO Technologies

In recent years, zero-valent iron  has been in short supply and the cost has increased dramatically. CETCO’s proprietary Organoclay PM-199 media has become an attractive alternative for this application due to its:

  • High adsorption capacity
  • High removal efficiency on a variety of organic species
  • Cost effectiveness
